About Truckee River Flood Project

Our Mission:
The mission of the Truckee River Flood Management Project is to reduce the impact of flooding in the Truckee Meadows, restore the Truckee River ecosystem, and improve recreational opportunities by managing the development and implementation of the Truckee River Flood Management Project.
The Flood Project is a a joint effort between the cities of Reno and Sparks, Washoe County, the US Army Corps of Engineers and numerous stakeholders. Early on the Truckee River Flood Project developed an action plan that provided a forum for residents, businesses, community leaders, regulatory agencies and government officials to conduct an analysis of flooding issues and evaluate possible solutions. This approach included:
Project Planning and Design
- Convening stakeholders, setting goals and timelines
- Identifying committee members
- Determining project design hydrology, environmental and recreational needs
- Land use determination and land acquisition
- Identifying costs and benefits
Public involvement and information
- Establishing public outreach program
- Identifying project partners and inviting their participation
- Soliciting public input
- Distributing project information
- Sponsoring public awareness / involvement activities
Maintaining support
- Conducting two-way communications with stakeholders, public interest groups, business community and elected officials
Improving Corps of Engineers' participation
- Establishing and maintaining improved flow of information
- Developing cost sharing and design agreements with the Corps
- Discussing and negotiating project features that are included in the locally preferred plan
Project funding
- Surveying the community to identify thresholds for potential funding sources
- Approaching the legislature for one-time funding appropriation
- Finance Sub-committee provide in-depth analysis of potential funding sources and risks/benefits of these sources
